Why Most Custom Boat Shirt Companies Don't Understand Sailboats
Custom Yacht Shirts, The Custom Captain, Billfish Gear, Salty Printing—they all offer the same thing: send a photo, wait for an artist to trace it, get your shirt.
But here's the problem: these companies built their businesses around sportfishing boats and powerboats. When a sailboat owner uploads a photo, they're getting artists who don't know the difference between a fin keel and a full keel, or why your Tayana 37's canoe stern matters to you.
Comparison of generic traced sailboat artwork versus accurate technical line drawing showing proper keel, rigging, and hull details.

What Sailboat-Specific Actually Means
When we say we understand sailboats, we mean details that matter to sailors:
Keel Types - Keel type, center vs aft cockpit, tall rig vs standard rid - these are details that completely change your boat's profile. Many printers or other boat shirt companies often get this wrong or simplify it. We use our own knowledge of sailing, to find the manufacturer drawings, so your Bristol 35.5's cutaway forefoot looks exactly right. If no drawings are available, we'll ask you for a photo, and will create the line drawing using that.
Rigging Accuracy — Cutter rig? Ketch? Fractional sloop? The standing rigging is part of what makes your boat yours. Photo-traced artwork often misses spreaders, backstays, or gets the mast position wrong.
Hull Shapes — Canoe stern, reverse transom, long overhangs, plumb bow—these aren't details to gloss over. They're why you bought your boat.
Deck Details — Dodgers, biminis, roller furling—the stuff that makes your boat your boat.
Why We Don't Need Your Photo
Other companies need you to upload a photo because they're starting from scratch every time. We've built a library of line drawings sourced from actual boat manuals—the same clean artwork manufacturers use.
This means:
- No waiting for artwork approval
- No back-and-forth fixing mistakes
- Accurate proportions every time
- Coverage for ~98% of sailboats on the water
We've got the Catalina 27, the Hunter 33, the Island Packet 38, the Pearson 36, the Tartan 34, the Westsail 32, and hundreds and hundreds more. If it's a production sailboat, we probably have it. If it's a custom boat, send us a photo and we'll show you the artwork before you order.
The Bottom Line
If you own a sportfishing boat, Custom Yacht Shirts or Billfish Gear will serve you fine.
But if you're a sailor—if you care about the details that make your boat different from every center console at the marina—you want a company run by sailors who already know your boat.
