What to put on a custom captain shirt
Four elements, in order of importance.
The boat. A line drawing of your exact model is the whole point. A Catalina 36 has a different sheer, rig, and keel than a Beneteau Oceanis 40.1, and anybody who sails will notice which one is on your chest. A stock silhouette says nothing about your boat.
The boat name. Set under or beside the drawing. This is what makes the shirt yours rather than a model poster.
The title. Captain, Skipper, or Owner. One word. It reads better than a sentence and it leaves room for the crew versions of the same shirt.
Optional details. Hailing port, the year you took delivery, or a hull number. Useful if they mean something to you, easy to overdo. A shirt with four lines of text under the drawing stops looking like a captain shirt and starts looking like a promotional item.
What to leave off: fabric claims, novelty slogans, and clip-art anchors. The understated version ages better and gets worn more, which is the only measure that matters.
Where the design goes on the shirt
Placement changes how the shirt reads more than most people expect. There are two arrangements worth considering.
Drawing large on the back, small design on the left chest. This is the version most captains pick. From the front it is understated, close to a plain shirt with a small mark on the chest. From behind, at the helm, the full profile of the boat is visible from across the anchorage. It photographs well from the dock and it does not shout at a restaurant.
Drawing on the chest. A smaller version of the boat sits on the front with the boat name beneath it. Better if you want the design visible in conversation rather than at distance, and better under a jacket or foulies where the back is covered anyway.
For a crew set, pick one arrangement and use it for everyone. Mixing back prints and chest prints across a crew breaks the effect you were going for.
